GROUP THERAPY
Why group therapy?
Group therapy is a highly effective way to resolve many types of difficulties. Groups offer support to participants and decrease their sense of isolation. Frequently, relationship patterns from “real life” are recreated within the therapy group. This presents a unique opportunity to receive constructive feedback from others on how you are being perceived in a safe, controlled environment. With this feedback and the greater understanding it can provide, group participants can develop and rehearse new patterns of relating.
Therapeutic Walking Group
Dr. Lager holds therapeutic walking groups each spring and summer. There is a growing body of evidence that mood disorders such as depression and anxiety improve through participation in moderate exercise (please see below for articles about the positive benefit of exercise on mood). Research suggests that it may take at least 30 minutes of exercise a day for at least three to five days a week to significantly improve depression symptoms. But smaller amounts of activity — as little as 10 to 15 minutes at a time — can improve mood in the short term.
These groups are designed to combine the benefits of moderate exercise with the support and insights gained in group therapy. People often find it helpful as an adjunct to psychotherapy and/or medication. Please contact the office if you would like more information about joining a therapeutic walking group.
